Dr. Kandel has committed over twenty years to teaching biology, math and science at the University and High school level in diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts. Her research and training include behavioral ecology, behavioral neuroendocrinology, coral biology and coral reef monitoring. These diverse experiences and interests are reflected in the range of topics she teaches from freshman biotechnology to human anatomy for nurses and a senior Microbiology course and laboratory for Biology students.

Dr. Kandel teaches Biology at the Carolina College and Pastoral Institute in Chuuk (Micronesia) in the summer session. As the distance learning science coordinator of the Chaminade program in CCPI until 2017, she developed science laboratory curricula and conducted capacity-building teachers’ workshops for the Chuuk DOE which aim to enhance science education in Micronesia.

Dr. Kandel is sincerely committed to the Marianist value of promoting education to foster social justice and she feels privileged to dedicate her passion for science and teaching in pursuit of this goal.


Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from North Carolina State University (NCSU), Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Zoology/Marine Biology from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
